Splitgraphic biennial group exhibition “Handwriting in Graphic Art” in Vilnius Graphic Art Centre


On Tuesday 31st  May, 2016 at 6 pm there is the opening of  Splitgraphic biennial group exhibition “Handwriting in Graphic Art” in Vilnius Graphic Art Centre.

Exhibition presents Croatian contemporary female graphic artists: Ana Vivoda, Letricija Linardić, Kristina Restović, Iva Šarić, Petra Kriletić, Mia Vučić, Ivana Kevo, Bruna Carev, Danijela Šušak, Tihana Dražić, Ivana Franke i Maja Zemunik-Mužinić.

Exhibition is open until 25th June, 2016.

About the exhibition:


This group exhibition will show contemporary Croatian female graphic artists who participated in Splitgraphic Biennials over the years and donated their works to the Splitgraphic Collection.

The idea for this group exhibition stems from the curatorial concept of the third Splitgraphic, held in 2007. The title of the group exhibition that was housed in the Old City Hall in Split was Female Handwriting in Graphic Art. The concept behind the main group exhibition in 2007 was to draw attention to female graphic artists. One of the main awards went to two Croatian graphic artists and university professors of graphic art, Nevenka Arbanas (Art Academy, Zagreb) and Maja S. Franković (Academy of Applied Arts, Rijeka). They are authors of notable and renowned graphic oeuvres, which transcend traditional graphic art techniques and introduce modern formats, objects, conceptions and ideas about graphic art. The same year, the 3rd edition of Splitgraphic introduced its Young Artist Award, which went to Petra Kriletić, who was at the time a student at the Graphic Department of Zagreb’s Academy of Fine Arts.

The main idea behind the exhibition at the Vilnius Graphic Art Centre is based on the 2007 concept, but for this edition it selects names form the younger generation of Croatian female graphic artists who participated in Splitgraphic’s group exhibitions from 2003 to 2015. The selection and curatorial concept of the exhibition is focused on the contemporary approach to graphic visual language mediated through traditional graphic processes which in some instances come close to installation and reflect on graphic art itself.

The series of exhibited linocuts entitled Traces by Ana Vivoda (Rijeka, 1979) is merely a small part of the artist’s oeuvre representing her constant preoccupation with graphic matrix and traces as processes materialized on paper. Ana Vivoda teaches at the University of Zadar and is the first printmaker to receive a PhD in the field of graphic art in Croatia.

Letricija Linardić (Rijeka, 1971) is a professor at the Printmaking department at the Academy of Applied Arts in Rijeka. Her works, grouped under the title Prints of Memory, were exhibited at the 7th Splitgraphic in 2015. They are drypoint prints, which are the result of artist’s own emotions and thoughts transmitted on paper through a machine.

Ivana Franke (Zagreb, 1973) is one of the most renowned Croatian contemporary artists, currently residing in Berlin. She graduated from the Graphic department at the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb. Her works are mainly installations based on her printmaking background and are often complexly related to architecture. Ivana Franke participated in the 1st Splitgraphic in 2003 with a serigraphy from her graphic portfolio entitled Binoculars, which presented a research of optical structures. Her exhibited work borders on installation, optical effects, and illusion where light and placement play a significant role.

Kristina Restović (Split, 1973) is a professor at the Art Academy in Split. In her work she predominantly uses intaglio techniques. Her inspiration comes from contemporary images dealing with the notion of multi-originality by repetition, the printing of matrix and shapes in graphic media. Her series Tattoos (Sailor Jerry/Adolf Loos) was exhibited at the 7th Splitgraphic in 2013, where she superimposed the notion of Adolf Loos’ theory and pop tattoo images with his name, knowing that “ornament is crime”. In her series Easy Chairs shown during the last Splitgraphic in 2015, the arist repetitively printed the plastic easy chair that appears on every beach in Dalmatia as a motive of art.

Petra Kriletić (Zagreb, 1980) and Iva Šarić (Varaždin, 1985) graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb and have, since 2007, been continuously participating in Splitgraphic’s main group exhibitions. The serigraphy entitled System#2 forms a part of Petra’s preoccupation with the relationship between shape, graphic print and space. Space is an important segment of these constructivist prints. System is made out of a specific number of graphic sheets which, when assembled, constitute a whole, 3-dimensional structure. Each print is a part of the final graphic construction, a component of the system. HANDOFFSET CMY(K) by Iva Šarić is put together like a puzzle. This series is conceived as a demonstration of the graphic processes, whereby the printmaker employed her hand as a printing machine, using stamps to create signs on paper.

Mia Vučić (Zagreb, 1981) won the Young Artist Award at the 5th edition of Splitgraphic in 2011. She is a graphic artist and a graphic designer. Her latest work, entitled No Content, is a reflection on the digital age and our identities and liberties. The blurred images and signs in her works relate to the dispersion of content in digital communication.

Danijela Šušak (Split, 1988), Bruna Carev (Split, 1990), Ivana Kevo (Split, 1991) and Tihana Dražić form the youngest sub-group among the artists exhibited. This group of former students from the Art Academy in Split collectively received the Young Artist Award at the 7th Splitgraphic in 2015. All four artists were supervised by professor Edvin Dragičević at the Art Academy in Split. Also exhibited is the Untitled work by Maja Zemunik-Mužinić (Split, 1982), who is an assistant for graphic art at the Art Academy in Split. These artists use contemporary graphic handwriting with classical graphic techniques and modern visual signs. Bruna Carev’ dyptich A Sudden Encounter combines graphic and object; Ivana Kevo uses bright red colour to invent a new world; Tihana Dražić plays with various forms and shapes in her circus; while Daniela Šušak is interested in experimental graphic art and in her works encourages tactile experience of art in museums and galleries.

The exhibition Handwriting in Graphic Art introduces a new concept based on the idea of revealing processes in printmaking, which will be the main topic of the next, 8th Splitgraphic in 2017, while at the same time combining the ideas that have appeared throughout the past seven biennials in the form of a dialogue on the sustainability of graphic art and contemporary visual language in graphics.
